Slide Guitarist, multi-stringed instrumentalist, songwriter and vocalist, Dom Turner, is the founding member of the group. Drum and percussion virtuoso and songwriter Rob Hirst (Midnight Oil), an acclaimed name synonymous with the best of Australian music, has been with Backsliders for 16 years. Joining Dom and Rob some of Australia’s most innovative and dynamic harmonica players.
‘Heathen Songbook’ the band’s 14th album to date, is a varied and eclectic mix of 21st Century original blues as well as a number of versions of songs by artists as diverse as diverse as blues legend Robert Johnson, hillbilly banjoist Dock Boggs and swamp-rock icon John Fogerty.
Backsliders originals shine on the album with themes of social injustice in the opening track ‘First World Eyes’, the perils of fast-food outlets in the developing world in ‘Gonna Get Hurt’ and the short-sightedness of architectural overdevelopment of Sydney in ‘Dickhead’.
Backsliders have been playing, touring the festival circuit and recording for 30 years. Renowned for their electric mix of blues styles and captivating live shows, they bring the latest release ‘Heathen Songbook’ to Milton.
